This week’s game had been re-arranged because last Saturday Sydenham Rangers could not get a side together. Over the years Sydenham had given us some tough games and played us at our home ground this season, they beat us 2-0 and could have been a lot more. This game had a lot at stake if we had won, we kept the pressure on Bishops Lydeard. They would need one point from their last two games to clinch the title, but if they lose to Minehead on Thursday night then it will be down to the last game of the season against us. We would need to win by a few goals to be sure of winning of the title. The situation for Sydenham was different they needed to win their last 2 games to stay in the 2nd division. On the night Sydenham had a strong line up to try and get all three points and be the only side in the league to take 6 points of us. We had a strong side out ourselves, so it had all the makings of a good game. The game started at a fast pace with Sydenham trying the long ball for their quick strikers to run on to, but the defence trio Gary Head, Kered Pople and new boy Adam Evans held strong and won the important headers in the danger zone. Matthew Washer and Matt Kinsey were causing problems for Sydenham on the wings with their intelligent runs forward. As usual the work horses Ryan Weston and Adam Kinsey were chasing down every loose ball and the midfield trio Jason Mcpheat, Justin Lewis and Christopher Organ were playing some short and affective passes in the midfield. With 15 minutes gone Matt Kinsey made some good ground down the right wing and passed the ball to his brother Adam to receive it back inside the box to slot it in past the keeper to put us 1-0 up. Sydenham hit back within 5 minutes after some immense pressure to level the scores at 1-1. Sydenham kept pressing hard for another goal and they got it, but only after Lloyd Hackling made a great save to push it on to the cross bar and bounce back out to the 6 yard box for a Sydenham player to have a tap in and make the score 2-1 to Sydenham. There was only 10 minutes left of the first half and Ryan Weston chased down a loose ball and got brought down by the keeper, which was well inside the penalty area and a definite penalty. The referee gave a free kick outside the box, which came to nothing and the score remained the same for the first half. The team talk at half time from the Manager was swift, but was enough to get the players up for the second half and try and turn the game around in our favour. Each side had good chances within the first 20 minutes of the second half in Sydenham’s case to increase their lead or for us to equalise. The game got a little ugly with a few dirty challenges flying in all over the pitch. At one point on the field there was a little scuffle, which halted play for 10 minutes and the ref sent a Sydenham player off. With 15 minutes of the game left and the game still a little ugly we were awarded a dodgy penalty, that should of never stood, but it made up for the penalty that got turned down in the first half. The goal machine Adam Kinsey stepped up with his bullet left foot and blasted it into the roof of the net to level the scores 2-2 and make the last 15 minutes really tense for both sides. Sydenham had a good chance to finish of the game with a one on one with our keeper Lloyd Hackling only to see him pull of a good save and keep us in the game. Now that the clock was ticking down and the game looking like a draw the heavy centre midfielder Jason McPheat managed to get off the ground and score with his head to make us 3-2 winners after a entertaining game of football. We have our last game of the season to look forward to now against Bishops Lydeard.
