We played 3 games last week which included Bridgwater Sports home, Bishops Lydeard away and Sampford Blues at home. Each of these games required a lot of effort and took a lot out of the team, but gained us 7 points from a possible 9 to help us maintain our current position at the top of the table. This next game featured us away to Watchet Reserves. Over the years we have only beaten Watchet once at home, they always manage to get a good side together and win by the odd goal which normally get the players heads down. Every time we play at Watchet there is always a cross wind blowing from the sea, which makes it very hard to play against. We started this game with a strong line up and a strong bench. The first 10 minutes of the game Watchet were gaining the upper hand and causing us a lot of problems in the centre of the park and down both sides of the pitch. Watchet had a couple of chances to go in front, but the rock solid three kept the score at 0-0. As the game went on we started to get a bit of the ball, and we weren’t playing how we know we can play, which was not our style and was well below our standards. With 18 minutes gone we had a rare attack, with Ryan Weston breaking free from midfield and slotting the ball forward to Adam Kinsey, who drilled the shot to see it saved by the keeper and pushed it for a corner. While the pressure was on Watchet we pushed everyone forward to try and break the deadlock. The ball was whipped in by Adam Kinsey and fell to the ground to end up in a goal mouth scramble. Watchet failed to clear there lines, wing back Matt Kinsey smashed the ball into the back of the net from 3 yards out to give us an undeserved advantage and go 1-0 up. Watchet would not give in and continued to play good football and cause a couple of problems to our defence. With the pressure being put on us even more, we had to defend with every think we had to keep the lead. The ball got cleared and with a bit of luck we found ourselves deep inside the Watchet half with many players pushed forward. The Watchet defence was split apart by some good football, the old veteran Justin Lewis advanced forward to slot the ball home on the 25 minute mark to put us 2-0 up. Now that Watchet were 2 goals down we knew the next goal would be crucial for us to kill of the game. Adam Kinsey received the ball high up the pitch and tried a fancy flick instead of just holding the ball up to kill a bit of time. The Watchet defence cleared the ball, which took an awkward bounce right on the edge our penalty area and was not cleared properly by Kered Pople and allowed a Watchet forward to run on to it and then be taken out by our keeper Lloyd Hackling to give away a penalty. Watchet scored the penalty to make the score 2-1 to us, which stayed the same in the first half. In the second half we did not get going and Watchet were all over us creating chance after chance, but not putting the ball in the back of the net. The pressure paid off for Watchet as they got a deserved equalizer from a miss timed header by Shawn Pople, which is very rare to give an advancing Watchet forward the opportunity to run onto a loose ball and put it in the back of the net to easily. As the game came to the closing stages we were pushing forward more to get the winner as a draw was no good for us in our title challenge. This was a big mistake as a Watchet forward picked up the ball and beat 2 defenders to score a very good goal in the top right corner and make them 3-2 winners. This was a massive dent in our title hopes which will make it even harder to finish runners up. We could still finish top but it’s going to be extremely hard, and were going to need Bishops Lydeard to drop some points.
